Two Books You Should Read...

I just finished Thom  Rainer's new book, Autopsy of a Deceased Church, and it's a must-read for those interested in the future of their congregation. Rainer identifies characteristics of fourteen churches that have closed their doors...and issues a timely warning for those suffering from similar symptoms. If you think this doesn't effect you, then you might be surprised. Currently, over 1,000 Southern  Baptist churches close their doors each  year and researchers project that over one-half of Southern Baptist Churches will close their doors by 2050. Like it or not, a church near you is going out of business...and it might be the one you currently attend!

I currently have our worship staff at First Baptist Jackson, as well as a monthly men's group that I lead, reading Tullian Tchividjian's Unfashionable: Making a Difference in the World by Being Different. This book reminds us that in our attempt to reach the masses many churches have made the gospel fashionable...ironically resulting in the loss of what makes the Gospel distinctive and powerful.

Both of these books will challenge the "business as usual" approaches that many of us adopt in our churches. Take the time to read these two insightful will be glad you did.

BONUS: This past Sunday our senior pastor, Mark Smith, continued his sermon series on the book of Acts. This was one of the most powerful sermons I've heard so I wanted to make it available to you to watch. It will challenge you as follower of Christ as we seek to fulfill the Great Commission and the Great Commandment!
